5 Things to Consider about Your Eye Makeup

October 23, 2017

Most women love their eye makeup. It's a fun and easy way for us to accentuate our eyes and express our personalities. We have learned that most women will leave the house without wearing their skin products, but they will not leave the house without wearing their eye makeup. In fact, mascara is the #1 desert island item described for cosmetic products. But can our eye makeup be harming the wellness of our eyes?

This article (click here for link) describes how eye makeup can clog the oil glands that sit just behind the eyelashes. These highly specialized lash line oil glands are called the meibomian glands.  They are responsible for secreting the oily layer of the tear film. When the meibomian glands are clogged a few things happen:

1.  The oily layer of the tear film is insufficient. When tears do not have oil to coat them, they evaporate faster, leading the dry eyes.

2. The clogged oil glands can cause painful bumps along the eyelids known as styes or chalazions.

3. Clogged oil glands lead to the secretion of inflammatory chemicals into the ocular surface.

4. Inflammation along the eyelid margin is known as blepharitis. Blepharitis will cause irritations such as: itching, burning, puffy eyes, crusting eyelids, and dry eyes.

5. Over time the inflammation will accelerate the aging process and cause lashes fall out and grow in misdirected directions.

How can we still enjoy eye makeup while preventing this from happening? Stay tuned for our next post about maintaining the wellness of the eyes...
